Materials required for regreasing:
- lanolin
- Warm water
- Bowl or sink
- Dishwashing liquid
- towels
Step-by-step instructions:
-
Preparation: Make sure your merino wool is clean. If the wool is very dirty, wash it first according to the recommended care instructions.
-
Prepare lanolin: If you are using pure lanolin, dissolve it in warm water. You can use about one teaspoon of lanolin per liter of water. For an even mixture, you can dissolve the lanolin in hot water first and then add cold water.
- Add a splash of dishwashing liquid until the lanolin bath turns a milky white color.
-
Soak wool: Dip the clean merino wool into the lanolin water. Make sure that the wool is completely submerged so that the lanolin can work evenly on the fibers.
-
Soaking time: It is best to soak the wool in the lanolin water overnight. During this time, the lanolin can work its way into the fibers and restore their softness and water-repellent properties.
- Gently squeeze or spin in the machine: After the exposure time, remove the wool from the lanolin water and squeeze it gently to remove excess water. For example, between two towels. Be careful not to wring the wool too hard to avoid damage. Or spin at 400-800 revolutions.
- Drying: Lay the wool flat on a towel or clothes rack if it is still very wet. If it is spun well, you can also hang it to dry on the clothes rack.
Re-greasing Merino wool should be done every few weeks or so, depending on how often the wool has been used. With this simple guide, you can ensure that your Merino wool retains its natural softness and water-repellent properties and stays in top condition for a long time.
