Elimination Communication and Potty Training Start: What Do You Really Need?

Clear, loving guidance for your basic equipment.

FINDING THE RIGHT BASIC EQUIPMENT

TRY IT OUT FIRST

Smooth start

For an initial EC attempt, a sink, a suitable bowl, or a toilet are perfectly sufficient.

If you want to integrate EC more frequently into your daily life, a suitable EC nappy and five inserts will make things much easier. An EC potty can also be practical, but it is not a prerequisite.

On this page, you will find out:

  • which EC nappy suits your baby's size and developmental stage,
  • which inserts are included,
  • when a potty makes sense,
  • and what you really don't need for getting started.

FOR NEWBORNS AND YOUNGER BABIES

Starting small: Babysize and five inserts

For getting started, we recommend:

The elimination communication diaper can be opened quickly. The inserts ensure that often only the insert needs to be changed and not the entire diaper

An elimination communication pot is very practical for ECing on the sofa or on the go, but it is not absolutely necessary to get started.

FOR OLDER AND MOBILE BABIES

Continue with the crawler

If your baby is already older or mobile, we recommend:

The crawling diaper cover stays on the child even when opened, making elimination communication easier if your baby is already rolling, crawling, or standing. An EC potty remains an optional addition here as well.

Common Questions on Getting Started with Elimination Communication

Do I really need everything on this page?

No. This page is intended to provide guidance, not pressure.

Many families start with a basic elimination communication diaper, inserts, and a potty. Others want to be more comprehensively equipped before birth. Both are perfectly fine.

Which products should I start with?

You don't need to buy anything for a first try. If you want to use elimination communication more often, we recommend a suitable EC diaper and a 5-pack of inserts. An EC potty can make everyday life easier, but it's not a prerequisite.

At what age can I start with elimination communication?

Many families start right after birth.

However, it is generally possible to start at any time. Elimination communication is not a race. Older babies and toddlers can also benefit from it.

What size is suitable for a newborn?

The products recommended here are intended for use from birth and generally fit up to approximately:

  • 68 cm body length
  • 7.5 kg body weight
  • approx. 6 months

Of course, this can vary slightly depending on build and development.

How many elimination communication diapers do I need?

That depends on how often you want to wash.

Our experience:

  • 1 diaper is enough to try out
  • 2 diapers provide more relaxation in everyday life
  • 3 diapers are a good standard for many families

Do I absolutely need a potty?

No. Many parents initially hold their baby over the sink, a bowl, or the toilet.

However, an EC potty often makes everyday life much easier and more pleasant – especially at night or when out and about.

Isn't elimination communication incredibly time-consuming?

Most parents are surprised how uncomplicated elimination communication can be.

It's not about catching every pee or being perfect. Many families integrate elimination communication step by step into their everyday lives and continue to use diapers as a backup.

What is a good gift for a birth?

Particularly popular are:

  • Baby blankets
  • Elimination communication rompers
  • Gift certificates
  • Changing pads
  • Our recommended starter products

If you are unsure, a gift certificate is often the best choice.

Can I ask you for help?

Of course.

If you are unsure which products are right for you, feel free to write to us.

We will help you find the right choice for your very personal journey.
