Anyone travelling with a baby for the first time quickly realizes:
Such a tiny human needs an astonishing amount of luggage.
Clothes.
Burp cloths.
Sleepwear.
Favorite cuddly toy.
And, of course, diapers.
Lots of diapers.
Better a few too many than one too few.
And suddenly, between summer dresses, toothbrushes, and sun hats, half a pack of diapers is in the suitcase.
What we easily forget:
Each of these diapers travels twice.
First, clean in our bag.
And after a few hours, out again as trash.
At the hotel.
At the campsite.
At the rest stop.
At friends' houses.
Or somewhere on the road in a public bin.
Of course, your baby doesn't suddenly need less security because of this.
And no one should save on diapers while traveling by letting a full diaper be worn longer.
But perhaps there are some moments when a diaper doesn't have to get full in the first place.
This is precisely where diaper-free travel can become surprisingly simple.
Less diaper waste when traveling doesn't start with less changing
This is particularly important to us.
A wet or soiled diaper is changed.
Even on vacation.
Even if the next bin is far away.
Even if there are only three diapers left in the bag.
Less diaper waste is meaningfully generated not by changing later.
But by some excretions ending up outside the diaper from the start.
For example:
You take a break during a car journey.
Your baby is going to be taken out of the seat anyway.
You briefly open the backup and hold them over a small potty or a toilet.
If a pee comes and the diaper stays dry, it can simply continue to be worn.
Precisely then, a new diaper was actually avoided.
Diaper-free travel doesn't have to be perfect at all
At home, you might have long had your familiar moments.
After waking up.
While breastfeeding.
Before bathing.
Or you now know that specific look just before a bowel movement.
When traveling, many things are different.
Different sleep times.
Different rooms.
Many new impressions.
Perhaps a long day in the car.
Therefore, diaper-free travel can also look different from home.
Perhaps you only do EC (Elimination Communication) in the mornings on vacation.
Perhaps not at all on one day.
And suddenly three times the next.
Diaper-free on the go should adapt to your vacation – not the other way around.
Even a single EC moment a day makes a difference
On a one-week trip, one actually saved disposable diaper per day means:
7 fewer diapers.
For two weeks of vacation:
14 fewer diapers.
Perhaps it's two on some days.
Perhaps none on others.
We are not concerned with proudly entering a number into a table at the end of the vacation.
The thought is much nicer:
A few diapers didn't even have to be used and then disposed of.
And if such small moments arise not only during summer vacation but also during weekend trips, visits, and day trips, they add up over time.
Which moments are particularly suitable for EC while traveling?
You don't have to constantly pay attention to signals on the go.
The easiest situations are those where you pause anyway.
Before departure
Before you get into the car or head to the station, you can briefly hold your baby for EC.
You're at home anyway.
Everything is familiar.
And perhaps you start the journey with a dry backup.
After waking up
For many families, this is one of the easiest EC moments anyway.
This also works in a hotel or holiday apartment.
Baby wakes up.
You pick them up.
Open backup.
Briefly hold for EC.
And then your vacation day begins.
During a travel break
You take breaks anyway on longer car journeys.
The baby is taken out of the car seat.
Perhaps a diaper change is planned anyway.
Then you can briefly offer a potty or a toilet beforehand.
During a planned diaper change anyway
You don't have to make an extra appointment for it.
If the diaper is going to be opened anyway, EC can simply be a small part of that moment.
During a recognizable bowel movement
Many parents eventually become quite good at recognizing a bowel movement.
If a suitable place is available, this moment can be particularly practical.
Because stool outside the diaper often means not only less waste but also significantly less cleaning up the baby.
Diaper-free on the road in the car
While driving, your baby naturally remains securely buckled in.
The backup takes over.
EC is only done during a safe break.
Perhaps you have a small potty with you.
Perhaps there's a toilet.
Perhaps it just doesn't fit at all.
Then you simply change the diaper.
Diaper-free should make a trip easier – never more complicated.
Diaper-free on the go on the train
On the train, EC can sometimes be surprisingly uncomplicated.
Many long-distance trains have toilets and changing facilities.
If your baby has just woken up or you notice a very clear moment, you can use it.
But here too:
You don't have to walk through the train with your baby, bag, and half your household for every possible pee.
If it fits: wonderful.
If not: That's what the backup is for.
